RJ04 - Describe the inquiry activity you will use for your informal assessment review. Explain what science practice(s) it will teach and how you plan to assess them.
• Review RI GSES pertaining in Scientific Inquiry

An idea for an inquiry activity will be using marshmallows to model atomic structures in regards to the Physical science GSE #5. I will first give the students a diagram of what I want them to build out of toothpicks and marshmallows. I am using mini marshmallows that are colored. The diagram will be a simple color code page that the simply put the marshmallow on the pare and "connect the dots" with toothpicks. At this point the students will still not have a clue that they are modeling compounds. Then mid way through I will ask them to put the marshmallows aside and talk about rearranging compounds in the standard symbolic format. After that I will give them the same the formula for photosynthesis and ask them to model that with the marshmallow. Hopefully, the kids who are sharp will catch on and realize they already did it.

John, could you provide a bit more detail? - fogleman fogleman Feb 19, 2009
